What is microneedling?

Sometimes also called collagen induction therapy, skin needling or dermarolling, Using either a pen device or roller with multiple short needles punctures are created across the surface of the skin. This causes inflammation in the skin which stimulates the production of collagen. By increasing these elastic collagen fibres your skin will become smoother, tighter and more youthful. This is also usually performed with serums tailored to your skins specific needs and allows the active ingredients to penetrate deep into the skin. A course of 3-6 sessions are usually recommended spaced at 4-6 weeks apart.

How long does it take to work?

Most areas need 3-6 treatments at 4 week intervals to reach the required result.

Is it painful?

Anaesthetic cream is applied beforehand so there is minimal discomfort. Afterwards there may be tightness and mild stinging similar to a light sunburn.

At home vs in clinic microneedling

At home dermarolling can be beneficial if using a good quality product and only looking for general improvement in skin smoothness and texture, however the needles in the at home rollers are much shorter than those used in clinic. At The Apex Clinic we use a medical grade CE marked pen device with adjustable needle lengths. We can therefore adjust the length depending on the area we are treating and if we need to penetrate deeper to treat acne scarring or melasma (hyperpigmentation) for example.
